One of the great bennies of a radio job is getting to meet the artists, and having them record an “ID” using your name and station. That way, you can play this so-called endorsement every time you play that artist’s music.
When I met Ozzy (for the second time) while working at a station in Minneapolis in 2000, he was gracious enough to do one for me, but it was pretty hard for him to get it right despite the fact that I had taken the time to give him a script – the exact phrase I wanted him to say in very large letters. He wasn't loaded, but pretty distracted by everything that was going on around us (it was actually an event with all the members of Black Sabbath).
We probably did about 15 takes to get it right, but when I got back to the station to produce it, I discovered that the outtakes were far funnier than the one he finally did right.
I've been very lucky to meet so many cool people through the years - take a look at my "Brushes With Greatness" photo album from my Facebook page.
