As I was watching the conclusion of the Duke game last night, I saw something that I have never before seen in College Basketball on this high of stage. As teams do in the latter seconds of a basketball game when they have a lead, Villanova was dribbling out the final seconds of a big lead. Usually, the other team does not contest or play defense as the final seconds tic down. I could not believe my eyes, when a Duke player stole the ball from the Villanova guard with a few seconds left to take an uncontested shot. I laughed my butt off when this happened. I was shocked. I have never seen that before. Now don't get me wrong, when I played in High School and this took place against my team, I had plenty of thoughts of doing the same. I was taught to never give up, and play the full game as hard as I could. I couldn't stand the thought of just letting the game end. There was always a thought in my mind that the game wasn't over until the buzzer sounded. No matter what the score. Why would anyone let a team beat you without a fight? So I understand completely why the Duke player did what he did. At the same time, being out of College and not involved too much in competitive Sports anymore, my position on this situation has changed. Maybe because I realize that everyone does it. I have come to accept that sometimes, a game is over before the horn sounds. But I am torn between thinking that what the Duke player did was bad sportsmanship, or was it just not accepting the loss? I don't know. I am leaning towards thinking it was not the correct thing to do. But then again, I can't really blame the kid. His season is over. I'm just not sure about this issue. Either way, it was quite a sight to see.
