Don't Puke: Corn Smut, Bacteria-Laced Corn Kernels

Yep, that's right...we're down to eating corn kernels filled with bacteria. It's a product known as corn smut, though it has many nicknames (maize mushroom, corn truffle, huitlacoche, to name a few.) Here's the gist, the product is actually made from diseased corn kernels infected with a fungus that causes the corn to swell with tumors filled with blackish-blue puss (click the Gallery tab for a few appetizing images.) Once infected, the God-awful looking corn is harvested, then served to those with a strong enough death wish to spread it on their burritos.

It's actually a delicacy in Mexico...In the states, not so much. We couldn't think of a better item for this episode of Don't Puke, so click the Featured Video tab to watch our attempt to choke this stuff down without dying. We don't get paid enough to do this.
