I know we'd all like to see someone with Missouri ties buy the Rams if the team, as many expect, is put up for sale. But Rush Limbaugh? That Rush Limbaugh?! Apparently there's some interest there.
Between his partisan rants on the airwaves and his questionable use of prescription drugs off of them, the conservative talk show host is known to be a huge football fan. (You may recall is brief dance with ESPN's football pregame show that ended with questionable comments about race being the reason Eagles quarterback Donavan McNabb was a media darling.)
Anyway, Limbaugh is now telling the St. Louis Business Journal that if the Rams go up for sale, he might be interested in buying. Seriously! Here's a clip from this morning's report:
"The Rams would be a great team to have," Limbaugh said in a phone interview from his Palm Beach, Fla., studio. "I have a lot of friends in ownership in the NFL, and my desire to get involved has not been a secret." Limbaugh grew up in Cape Girardeau but said that does not play into his thinking about the Rams. "This is a business decision," he said. And even for Limbaugh, whose new eight-year syndication deal with Premiere Radio Networks is estimated to be worth $300 million, buying into the NFL would be a stretch. "I have no debt whatsoever. This would require changing that," he said."
While Rush's Cape Girardeau roots may not play a role in the decision to buy, one would think they'd impact any decision about the team's location. (i.e. keeping them in St. Louis as opposed to moving them to LA)
That's a big plus. A big minus is having an owner who might be in over his head financially. Even with $300-million bucks and no debt, Limbaugh would reside in the pauper's section of NFL club owners. Even with revenue sharing and salary caps leveling the playing field, it's still a little concerning that the boss might be pinching pennies when it comes to signing players. Remember Bill Bidwell?

rogerqbert Staff 484 Days agoSeriously though, the guy has a deep love of football and seems to be extremely knowledgeable on the subject. Plus, even if it is a business decision, it would probably still bode well in terms of the team staying in town.
And, love him or hate him, Rush is hyper-competitive. You don't succeed at his level without being that. So that means he would probably do everything in his power to put a good team on the field. I think Rush buying the team could be a great thing.
