In a world where there is a website ranking nearly everything, I wasn't shocked to find walkscore.com out there ranking the "most walkable" cities in the country.  I was surprised, however, to see St. Louis appears nowhere on the list of the 40 most walkable cities.

They claim to be ranking America's 40 largest cities in this thing, so our town's absence may have something to do with recent bogus census stats that rank us 52nd in city population.

Regardless, based on their criteria, I think we have plenty of very walkable neighborhoods.  (These are spots in town where you could live easily without a car.)  Since moving here I've been very impressed with number of areas where you could ditch a vehicle.  (Unfortunately I don't live or work in any of them!)

How would you rate the "walkability" of St. Louis?  (A different survey, released last year by the Brookings Institute, ranks us number 16 in the nation.  Does that sound right?)

  • Living in West County, i can barely get to a main street without a car, let alone a grocery store. There are parts of the city that are extremely walkable (tower grove area and what not), however, i would say much of the st. louis area is not. I dont even know where there is a grocery store downtown (of course, i dont live downtown, so i can't claim that to be any sort of evidence). Generally though, i'd agree that the metropolitan area is not a very walkable area.
