McGwire Returning an Excellent Idea

The, possible, decision to bring back former slugger Mark McGwire as the new hitting coach of the team is a phenomenal one...if indeed true.

Right now this organization needs a change in the hitting department.  No offense to Hal McRae, who was pretty good in his time here, but it looks like his message just stopped getting through to the players.

Kinda like what Tony La Russa talks about when trying to determine whether or not he will return for his 15th season as manager...he says you have to analyze if your message (and your leadership) is still good enough to be around.

No one can be exactly sure what happened with the Cards offense down the stretch, but when the area of the team that struggles is what your job title falls under...you get the blame...fair or not.

Bringing in McGwire does not just bring about some change.  Heck, they could have made a change for the worse.

But Big Mac (regardless of your feelings towards him in light of the PEDs) knows hitting.  The man has always known the basic fundamentals of hitting as well as anyone out there...and he's going to get a chance to show it.

McGwire has loved the game so much that even during the last 8 or so years while he has stepped out of the limelight and away from the game, he STILL has held a de facto hitting camp for major league players.

Hitters such as Matt Holliday and Skip Schumaker think so much of McGwire and his knowledge of hitting that they have gone to his camp during the offseason.

Credit John Mozeliak for making the move, while unpopular to some, it is better for the team in the long run.

Regardless of your feelings for Big Mac.

He knows hitting.
