  • Rihanna Rewind

Sure, she's an international pop sensation now.  A few years ago, though, she was just your average high school student, struggling through a Mariah Carey cover in a talent show.  And when I say struggling, I mean STRUGGLING.  Click the video tab above to see Rihanna butcher MC's "Hero."  The performance rapidly falls apart after the second chorus.

  • Homicidal Elmo!

So much for a cuddly toy that interacts with your child on a personal level.  Elmo, having been tickled one too many times, has apparently cracked under the pressure.  A Florida family is incurring the wrath of the famed Sesame Street character, who keeps threatening to kill their child.

    From The Tampa Tribune:

"TAMPA - A cuddly, programmable Elmo doll revealed its dark side to a Lithia family yesterday after fresh batteries were installed.

Instead of singing songs or reciting the favorite color of its 2-year-old owner James Bowman, the doll started making death threats.

With a squeeze of its fuzzy belly, the Sesame Street character now says, in a sing-song voice, 'Kill James.'

'It's not something that really you would think would ever come out of a toy,' said Melissa Bowman, James' mother. 'But once I heard, I was just kind of distraught.'

The Elmo Knows Your Name doll, which connects to a computer to learn certain phases and names, recently ran out of battery power, Bowman said.

About an hour after she put new ones in, 'I noticed exactly what it was saying,' Bowman said. 'And my son was repeating exactly what it was saying.'

Bowman said Elmo is James' favorite character and has a collection of dolls. James even has Elmo slippers, but the malfunctioning, death-threat-spouting Elmo Knows Your Name doll is now being kept away from her son, Bowman said.

'This is his absolute favorite toy,' she said. 'So we've been going through a lot of hassle because he's trying to climb up the counter and up the closets to get it.'

Fisher-Price, the toy company that manufactures the dolls, said it will issue the Bowmans a voucher for a replacement doll. The company said it will examine James' model for the source of the problem and check if other Elmos are experiencing the same malfunction."

Never trust impossibly cute red  fuzzy things that can talk...

  • Paula Abdul is No Heidi Montag

Paula Abdul is reportedly unhappy with the way the video for "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow" turned out.  A source is quoted as saying that Paula doesn't necessarily think that it's "Heidi Montag bad, but she's still trying to pretend like it didn't happen."  The same source says that the AI judge is trying to keep her negative reaction under wraps because Randy Jackson was involved.

I'm not worried about hurting Randy Jackson's feelings, so I'll just say it - the video ain't great.  It's not HORRIFIC, mind you, but there's a definite, unnecessary layer of cheese on the whole thing.  Had they stuck to the song and the dance moves - which, as far as pop videos go, are fairly solid - they'd have been fine.  But when Randy Jackson moves in for a little bump-n-grind on Paula, I actually physically recoiled in horror.

The American Idol press photo at the end is the final nail in the video coffin.  I'm not sure who thought that would be a really good idea, but it certainly misses whatever mark they were aiming for.
