Looking back on my tumultuous high school days, I realize a hobby would have kept me out of much of the trouble I seemed to always find. It appears a legion of teens has taken the advice I failed to heed and they’ve gone and found themselves a worthwhile hobby…they build robots. I said “worthwhile”…not “normal.” Actually, not only do they build robots, they build robots designed to crush robots built by other robot builders…follow me?

It’s reminiscent of that TV phenom BattleBots, only replace adult nerds who should be doing something more productive with high schoolers who actually are doing something productive (the event’s founders instill a sense of teamwork and gracious professionalism into the lives of those who will soon run the country and tell guys like me what to do.) It’s called FIRST Robotics and I got to know the ins and outs of the event quite well through my former cohorts at the Saint Louis Science Center (the SLSC helps put on the event.)
Though I don’t fancy myself a robo-savvy fella, I’ll admit these students can build a mean machine. If you’d like to watch the madness unfold, haul tail to the Family Arena this weekend and bring a camera…trust me.
