M's coach Wetteland taken to hospital

A Seattle Mariners spokesman says former All-Star closer John Wetteland was taken to a Dallas-area hospital after authorities responded to a 911 call from his home.

Wetteland is the Mariners' bullpen coach. Team spokesman Jeff Evans says the club is still gathering details and is not ready to comment on why Wetteland was taken to a hospital.

Sgt. Roger Griggs of the Denton County Sheriff's office tells the New York Daily News that a woman at Wetteland's home called 911 on Thursday to say he was complaining of being depressed and contemplating suicide.

The 43-year-old Wetteland picked up 330 career saves in 12 seasons in the majors. He was selected MVP of the 1996 World Series with the Yankees.
