What To Do When Your Cat Gets Stuck in a Tree

Here's a helpful article I found on oregonlive.com about rescuing a cat from a tree.It seems that some animal rescue groups become overwhelmed with the amount of calls they receive about cats in trees. It's best to try to (safely) get the cat down yourself before calling someone else in.

I don't have this problem because A) I don't go outside and B) I don't have front claws to climb trees. Hopefully you'll be able to put these tips to use if you have a cat that gets stuck in trees.

If your cat climbs a tree (or if you see a cat up a tree), here are some things you can do to help the cat come down:

• Make sure there are no dogs around the tree or in the yard. Perhaps they scared the cat up the tree in the first place and their presence around the tree will not convince the cat it is safe to come down.
• Put some enticing cat food or tuna under the tree or on the lowest branch you can safely reach.
• Lean a ladder on the tree trunk as the cat may see that as an easier way to come down rather than jumping or shimmying down.
• Call an arborist or tree service. Many of these family owned businesses will help out. They might charge a modest fee.

If the cat is still up the tree after four days or if the cat seems to be in distress, a local rescue group may be able to dispatch some trained volunteers to scale the tree and safely rescue the cat from on high.

Another good reason to keep your kitty inside, safe and sound.
