The name of local St. Louis production company Crunchy Cool Films says it all, and the films it produces are as quirky as its name. Back in 2004, when Oscar Madrid and Jim Ousley came together for Hooch & Daddy-O , their first feature film, they had no idea that a $7,500 budget movie that shot only on weekends would turn out so wonderfully. The mockumentary, which wittily warns of the pitfalls of Hollywood stardom, has been featured at numerous national film festivals. It has also won several awards including "Best Comedy" award at the Planet Ant Film & Video Festival in Detroit. To check out the trailer from Hooch & Daddy-O, click on the Video tab.
ToastedRav had the opportunity to talk with Donna Northcott, who made her directorial debut with Hooch & Daddy-O and is also the founder and artistic director of St. Louis Shakespeare:
What can audiences expect? Hooch & Daddy-O was a hugely successful buddy cop series in the '80s - like "Starsky and Hutch," only cooler. The show ran for several seasons and had a large following, but eventually crashed and burned due to drug use, cast in-fighting and random inappropriate encounters with craft services staff. Now, 20 years later, the original cast has been brought back together for a reunion film. Unfortunately, all those old demons have once again reared their ugly heads. This is the documentary of that glorious, tumultuous return of America's favorite rogue cops. "The TV show you can't remember; the documentary you'll never forget."
What was your favorite part about working in St. Louis? Working with many of my favorite local actors, getting a crash course in film directing and finally directing a production which would last longer than a live production.
Oscar and Jim will be attending a special screening of Hooch & Daddy-O at Truman State University this weekend - Saturday, March 28 at 2 p.m. - where they'll also answer questions about Crunchy Cool Films' next project; The Bloodfest Club. What Oscar told ToastedRav about their next project:
"The Bloodfest Club is our second effort, which is currently in the early stages of pre-production. We're thrilled with the script, which was recently selected as a finalist in The Great American Screenplay Competition and nominated for the Golden Palm Award at the Beverly Hills Film Festival. We hope to complete the film next year, which coincidentally marks the 25th anniversary of The Breakfast Club. The Bloodfest Club is about a Chuck Norris-obsessed janitor who leads a brat pack of prep school students in a battle against alien zombies on graduation night.
We're obviously not looking to win an Oscar, but people can expect a very fun film inspired by the rich characters and sharp dialogue of John Hughes' films, meshed with the look and feel of The Lost Boys and fueled with the frenetic pacing of Evil Dead 2. If local filmmakers have the drive and determination, a low-budget feature can be made in St. Louis."
