You might not know his name, but you definitely know his voice. Legendary "King of Trailer Voice" Don LaFontaine passed away yesterday at the relatively young age of 68.
He passed away at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA after he developed pneumothorax, which is when a lung collapses and air builds up in the surrounding area, although the official cause of death has not been released.
He was probably the most well known voice actor ever and was featured in hundreds of thousands of commercials, but is best known for his "..in a world" trademark movie trailers voiceovers. If you went to the movies, you heard Don's voice.
I met Don and his wife Nita at my cousin's house (they were friends) a few years ago. We got to chatting and discovered that they were going to be on the same upcoming mexican cruise that my hubby and I were going on. We met up on the cruise when they graciously invited us to dinner on one of the nights in their very fancy suite (my husband and I had one of the cheapy lower deck rooms!). Don and Nita were such a nice couple, and Don was not just a talented guy, he was a gentleman to the core.
I can't imagine a voice to match his, and he will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Don.
P.S. check out the blog steph posted, it's a great video I saw years ago that Don is in.
