Zombieland

Zombieland stars Woody Harrelson as Tallahassee, a grizzled zombie-killing veteran, and Jesse Eisenberg as Columbus, a phobia-riddled college kid who has managed to turn his neurosis to his advantage.  The film is set in a world where zombies roam the countryside scavenging for the last remaining uninfected humans.  The two have formed a tenuous alliance when the meet-up with Wichita (Emma Stone) and her 12-year old sister Little Rock (Abigail Breslin).  It is a funny, dark, funny, action-packed, funny, violent, funny horror movie…it also happens to be funny.  It’s not aiming for high-art.  It wants to be one thing and one thing only – a laugh out loud, kick-ass zombie movie.  And, as such, it’s a perfect thing.  Everything about this film works: the zombies, the action, the performances, the humor…everything.  Even the on-screen credits (which continue throughout the movie) are awesome.

Amelia

If A&E’s Biography and the Lifetime Movie Network had a baby, Amelia would be that baby.  Starring Hilary Swank as famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart, the film is a painfully earnest biopic that fancies itself Oscar-worthy.  It’s not.  The movie is filled with overwritten, stilted dialog that no doubt looks great on the page but sounds utterly ridiculous when coming from the mouths of actual human beings.  Furthermore, most of the actors use accents and cadences that make them sound as if they just stepped out of an “old timey” newsreel.  Earhart was born and raised in Kansas…so why does Swank speak with a New England inflection that makes her sound like Katherine Hepburn?

Adam

In Adam, Hugh Dancy plays Adam Raki, a 28-year old with  Asperger’s Syndrome.  For those of you unaware, it is an  autism spectrum disorder.  Unlike other forms of autism, people with Asperger’s can communicate verbally and maintain their cognitive reasoning.  There have been very few depictions of Asperger’s Syndrome on screen.  And when it is depicted the condition often goes unnamed.  Many believe that Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory has Asperger's.  And NPR recently had an interesting piece about the possibility of Ponyo being a role model for kids with autism.  This film is one of the first to address the topic head-on.  As such, Adam (both the film and character) carries the burden of carrying the torch for those with Asperger’s and their loved ones.  It’s a difficult task since, unlike other conditions, the symptoms that manifest themselves aren’t universally shared.  It’s important to remember that Adam is meant to be someone with Asperger’s, not everyone with Asperger’s.

Love Happens

Expectations are remarkably low when a film is given a cringe inducing title like Love Happens.  A phrase that treacle is typically found on things like a poster of a cat spooning a dog or, perhaps, a wedding cake topper from Precious Moments.  Expectations are right.  Aaron Eckhart plays Burke, a widower who’s authored a self-help book on managing the grieving process.  As the film opens, he’s selling books and hosting seminars in hotels.  But success is just around the corner as his business manager Lane (Dan Fogler) is negotiating a deal that would result in a TV show.  But Burke is conflicted due to the fact that his financial success is a direct result of the death of his wife.  So no one is more surprised than him when he finds himself smitten with Eloise (Jennifer Aniston), the hotel’s florist.
