Can you believe Friday is National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day? I know, I know…It’s already been a year since we last sat around and did absolutely nothing in celebration of this holiest of holidays. The holiday started when Tom Roy, a farmer from Pennsylvania, realized he had an abundance of the naughty-looking edible and decided to do something about it. See, despite careful planting methods, famers often find themselves overwhelmed with the sultry squash come harvest time, since it’s known for offering excessively bountiful yields. Roy gave so much of the stuff away that women and children eventually ran from him in fear that he’d offer them yet another loaf of moist zucchini bread or can of curried zucchini soup. Hence, National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day. It’s simple, bag ‘em up, wait ‘til dark, and give ‘em to the family next door…now it’s their problem. There’s even a site that acknowledges the holiday by posting creative solutions for excessive amounts of zucchini. My personal favs:
-Carefully place a dozen or more zucchini in a large, sturdy black plastic trash bag, then add a couple layers of unwanted clothing. Drive to nearest Goodwill or Salvation Army, hand over bag to nearest volunteer. Politely refuse any offered receipt. Leave quickly.
- Buy a large roll of freezer paper--the kind that sub shops use to, you know, wrap up their subs & other sandwiches. Then proceed to wrap each zucchini which has managed to grow to a foot or more in length. Next time your child has a fundraiser, send him or her out supplied with these phoney subs. Tell child to drop them off with neighbors or relatives and leave quickly. It's advisable that a responsible adult hover nearby in a get-away car.
Missouri churns out its fair share of the veggie, so submit your own suggestions here and for goodness' sake, Happy National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day!
