I tend to think snail mailing actual cards reflects better upon your thoughtfulness than an e-card, but e-cards can be great too. Either way, you are still taking some amount of time to well-wish for the Holiday.
This year, I wasn't going to send cards but then I found this really neat card-making kit at Michaels and I thought it would be a good way to spend a couple of hours getting into the spirit.
Either way I think you are safe- I don't think people send out cards just to receive them back anyway.
